With that Powerglide you may have trouble getting any of them to idle in gear.Built a 5.3 with cam,springs,rods,ect.Motor is installed in an 01 silverado 1500 2wd shorty and running,innovate mtx-l wideband installed in the Y pipe,purchased HP TUNER and got the truck connected.Watched a pile of videos and read everything I can find pertaining to HP tuner.Truck is currently stuck in the garage with 10" of snow in the driveway so I cant get it out on the road any time soon.Ive got the basic functions of the software figured out but really nervous about making any changes that might do more harm than good.For you cam swap guys that figured this stuff out on your own where did you start?There isnt a guy within 300 miles of here that knows enough or is willing enough to help me with a base tune so Im going to give it my best shot.Should I pay someone to write a tune I can upload to get started or take a shot at it?I know about the tutorials and pay to learn courses and I plan on looking into that when I have the time,Im just trying to get a tune in it where its safe to put a little time on this motor.Thanx in advance for any help. At our big car show last year they each sounded pretty good so I asked what cam they used. Howards Cams, Rattler Cam, Hydraulic Roller Camshaft, Chev Gen III/IV, 234/242. The best sounding small block Chevy powered cars in our area have: an Edelbrock Performer RPM cam, a Mother thumper and a Crower roller cam. The only evidence that you swapped cams will be the gasket debris in your trash can and a half tube of silicone gasket maker on the workbench.
It will drive fine and improve your performance a little but it will have no personality. If you call a cam company help line they will point you to a very practical cam for your application. Some were built to run, some were built for the sound and fury but that combination isn't very workable today, mostly due to the crappy gas.
In the good old days guys would load up their engines with a Sig Erson 990B or Isky 550 Super leggera or some other monster cam and 12.5 to 1 compression and thump their way through the local hot spot. Hydraulic Roller Big Mama Rattler Camshaft 1987 - 1998 Chevy 305/350 2000 to 5900 Howards Cams. And it's got to go from A to B with some reliability. Ed, I get what you are trying to do give your car some "presence" with a good looking and mean sounding engine, maximum performance isn't really a consideration.
